In this one-of-kind conversation Thurman and Chan will share stories about meeting and spending time with the Dalai Lama. They will explore the multiple dimensions of the Dalai Lama’s worldview: his core spiritual beliefs and his distinctive take on education and science.
Robert Thurman, a past chair of the Department of Religion at Columbia, is one of the world’s most influential spokesmen of Buddhism, Tibet and the Dalai Lama today. Thurman met the Dalai Lama in 1962 and he was the first American to be ordained as a Buddhist monk by him.
Victor Chan first met the Dalai Lama at his home in 1972, 10 years after Thurman’s life-changing encounter. He co-authored the Wisdom of Forgiveness with the Dalai Lama and founded the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education in Vancouver in 2005. Read More »

Visions of Enlightenment will show examples of Buddhist art from the main Buddhist traditions: the Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana. In Vancouver, the latter traditions are well represented in the established Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Tibetan communities. The Theravada school represents the traditions of the Burmese, Thai and other Southeast Asian communities. A range of media will be represented, including sculptures (made of stone, metal or lacquered wood) paintings, ceramics, manuscripts, and textiles. Read More »

The Canada Tibet Commitee (CTC) - Vancouver is honoured to host Lhamo Tso for a public talk and a film screening of “Leaving Fear Behind.” Her husband, Dhondup Wangchen, created this 30-minute documentary film in 2008. He filmed clandestinely in Tibet, hoping to provide a vehicle for Tibetans to express their views prior to the Beijing Olympics. He was subsequently arrested by Chinese authorities and charged with “subversion.” He is serving a 6 year prison sentence for having created this film.

My name is Yumi Onozawa, the coordinator of the InterSpiritual Centre of Vancouver Society. I am very happy to invite you all to the special event that ISC is organizing. It is called “Protecting Our Sacred Waters” and it will be held on April 21, 2012, at the Unitarian Church of Vancouver (949 West 49th Avenue, Vancouver).
This event has two parts: a symposium for young adults during the day (10 am – 5 pm) and a public event in the evening (7-9 pm). Many environmental activists who very much care about our interrelated life with environment will be coming. The event will inspire you to engage in the current discussions on the environment, particularly on the effects of oil tankers and pipelines to our water resources.
For more details, please visit the ISC website: http://www.interspiritualcentre.com/protecting-our-sacred-waters/ You may also reserve seats for you and your friends today by going to our website. Reservation is strongly recommended. This is free event with donation at the door. I hope to see you all at evening event. Please feel free to circulate this event information among your friends, especially those who are with youth organization or groups.
